~ Gates ~

Competitors may be required to negotiate a gate either mounted or in-hand. The gate can be a metal ranch gate or a rope gate fashioned to open. The horse and rider combination will move through the obstacle quietly, deliberately and under the rider's direction. Rider must keep hand contact on the gate at all times.

Tenderfoot Example:

  1. Close the gate, keeping hand contact.
  2. Continue down trail

Maverick Example:

  1. Open the gate exhibiting sidepassing skills.
  2. Close the gate with same skills (example: 45 seconds).
  3. Rider must not lose hand contact with the gate.
  4. Avoid banging the gate into your horse or catching a hip when passing through the gate.
  5. Continue down trail

Horseman Example:

  1. Open the gate exhibiting sidepassing skills.
  2. Close the gate with same skills (example: 30 seconds).
  3. Rider must not lose hand contact with the gate.
  4. Avoid banging the gate into your horse or catching a hip when passing through the gate.
  5. Continue down trail

Many challenges will be the same for Maverick & Horseman (as above) with a possible difference in time allowed to complete it.
