Your horse should follow your cues without tossing their head or shaking it from side to side. The backing motion should be smooth and directed by the rider.

This is a sample of a judged obstacle you might encounter on the trail.

 

Tenderfoot Example:
  1. Stop on trail
  2. Back 3 steps
  3. Continue down trail

Maverick Example:

  1. Stop on trail
  2. Position horse for back up (uphill, around a tree, between logs)
  3. Back designated steps within judged time (45 seconds)
  4. Continue down trail

Horseman Example:

  1. Stop on trail
  2. Position horse for back up (uphill, around a tree, between logs, figure 8)
  3. Back designated steps within judged time (30 seconds)
  4. Continue down trail
